OK, so, lazy and hypocritical bastard that I am, I have never been to this one. I keep promising myself, but . . . I have no excuse, and neither do you. If you’ve never been to a gathering, as opposed to a con, then you’re really missing something. Think of the coolest family reunion you ever went to and people it with folks you actually want to spend time with who all love Halloween maybe even more than you do.

Hawaii is a lonely for haunters, but the Evil Queen is more than enough for a whole state.

Sometimes, for new folks to Halloween haunting, it can be intimidating to consider heading off to any one of the plethora of gatherings or conventions out there for us. One might be filled with self-doubt: Will my stuff be good enough? Will I get my money’s worth out of the seminars? Will the vendors ignore me if I don’t have thousands of dollars to spend?

Let me direct you toward a blog post over at the Garage of Evil network done by Jennifer A.K.A. The Evil Queen. She’s done an excellent job of summing up her National Haunters Con experience and hasn’t shied away from some the warts that inevitably crop up during any event. Jennifer is from Hawaii by the way, and had to travel further than anybody to get to her first convention. Hawaii also is a bit shy of haunters so imagine how it was from her perspective to have to plunk down more than gas money to get to where other haunters gather.

I love going to the big cons, but there’s nothing like a haunter gathering. It’s like a family reunion only with people you actually want to hang around. Ghosthunting 101 – by Laura Guiliano – Laura has been haunting for over 10 years and is also a part of Para-Boston Investigators, www.para-boston.org. She will show off some of her ghost hunting equipment and teach us the basics of this growing phenomena. She will also share some of the findings of the Para-Boston team.

101 uses for PVC… OK, more like 10 – By Victor Bariteau (AKA Halloween Zombie) – Victor receives a lot of “How did you do that?” questions in regards to some of his props and surprisingly many of the answers have been “PVC”. As haunters we have all used, or experimented with, PVC at least once – right? If not, why? It’s light, easy to work with and best of all, not expensive. Most of us know PVC can be bent and shaped with heat, but this presentation will take you to the next level. Victor has made rib cages, rusty pipes, wing frames, a fancy-shmancy cemetery fence; he has even made a “water cylinder” for a barrel pop-up. Along with PVC, Victor will also touch on how to work with fiberglass for water-proof corpsing.

Victor is Systems Administrator for State Street Corp. and has been Yard Haunting for 13 years in Fairhaven, MA.

Let there be light! – By Jim Wieloch – Jim will demonstrate how to automate lighting and sound effects using computerized Light Controllers. These systems are designed to control simple or elaborate lighting displays. The presentation focuses on the ‘LightORama’ hardware platform. He will review the available types of controllers from stand-alone controllers to synchronizing hundreds of controllers, motion detectors, animation servos and other devices using a personal computer or master controller. The information is intended for both home haunt and pro haunt applications and will provide examples.

Jim is a Systems Engineer: Manufacturing Automation and Motion Control for In-Motion, LLC. He has been haunting his home haunt ‘Graveside Manor’ for 9 years and is also co-creator of “A Hauntingly Enchanted Evening” Lantern Tour and Haunted Woods Walk. Both haunts are located in Coventry, CT

Action packed build it yourself Hauntfomercial! – by Steve O and friends – In a tribute to the late Billy Mays, Steve O from the Garage of Evil has volunteered (begged) a few great haunters into helping him present a live how-to on building not one, not two, but three (THREE!) props in one seminar. These are “must have” props/tools for any haunter and easy to build for all skill levels. As the haunters build the items, Steve will explain every step and give the technophobic among us the knowledge and confidence to build them. When the presentation is done, the 3 projects will be completed and operational so you can see what they do and how they work.

You’ll learn how to build:

* Laser vortex – Maybe the best bang for your buck. You can build this cool special effect for your home (or pro) haunt for around $30 bucks.

* Foam carving tool with variable power supply – This is not one of those cheap craft store special, but a real variable foam cutting power supply on par with those costing upwards of a $100 for around $25 bucks.

* Flicker circuit – The one, the only (the classic) fluorescent starter flicker circuit. For the soldering newbies, this is a great and very simple project to get you started on building your own haunt effects.

Doing all the actual work will be home haunters Jeff Durette, GoE Labs chief mad scientist Pete Flaherty, and the head honcho of Haunt Forum, Zombie-F. Basically we’re going to leverage Steve O’s strong suit – non stop talking. Steve, Pete, Jeff and Dave will be available later for brain picking, but we suggest you pick Steve’s brain before the after Gathering festivities begin.

“Lou” Harmon from “Trail of Terror” located in Wallingford, Connecticut will conduct a hands-on workshop and share tips and techniques using Wolfe Brothers makeup. In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to create two, quick zombie faces. Wolfe Brothers makeup is an easy to use, inexpensive addition to any haunter’s toolkit for making memorable characters and stomach churning effects. Audience members will have the option to purchase makeup sampler kits so they can follow along with Lou.

*Linear Actuators as an alternative to pneumatics and Scrim 101 – By
Ross Troiano*
Ross will show us Linear Actuators and how they can work better for some projects and even replace pneumatic cylinders in some applications. Plus Ross will show us examples of Scrim usage in haunts, both painted and non painted versions.

Ross works as a Project Lead in the theatrical and industrial scenic industry. From Broadway show sets (Legally Blonde the Musical) to Ballet (Un Ballo in Maschera) to large corporate stage shows (McDonald, State Farm Insurance) and Automobile Manufacturer Vehicle Unveilings (GM, Suzuki, BMW) and not to mention, Television News Sets for many major broadcasters (ESPN, ABC)

Haunting since his teenage years, Ross presently runs The Marshfield Boys and Girls Club Haunted House with the founder of the event, Beth Griffin. The haunted house is put on at the Marshfield Fair Grounds the weekend before Halloween and averages around 1500 people over that weekend. The Haunted attraction is fully staffed by volunteers from within the community with all the proceeds going directly to the Marshfield Boys and Girls Club. The event includes an outdoors haunted house, a less scary hayride for the younger ones – a little something for everyone.

*What is Halloween – By Lesley Bannatyne*
An illustrated talk about Halloween, its history and celebration today. Lesley Bannatyne is an author of four books on Halloween (all from Pelican Publishing). She is also a Boston Globe correspondent, covering stories ranging from local druids to Tibetan immigrants to bilingual education in Massachusetts. She co-founded the Studebaker Theater (1978) and is co-director of Invisible Cities Group (1990).

Lesley has shared her knowledge of Halloween on television specials for Nickelodeon and the History Channel (“The Haunted History of Halloween”), with Time Magazine, and has given talks at venues as diverse as the 2000 Halloween Convergence in New Orleans and the St. Louis Art Museum. She contributed the Halloween article to World Book Encyclopedia.

*Give your prop some brains! – By Steve O’Connor and Geoff Varosky*
The goal of this presentation is to de-mystify the process of using micro-controllers to automate and animate home built props. You will
learn: What to buy – How to hook it up – Getting started with programming and more. Steve and Geoff will also pick a couple of
volunteers and guide them in a hands-on demonstration of writing simple programs that can activate prop elements like pneumatics, servos, LEDs, and 110V items such as fog machine triggers and lights.

** Don’t be afraid! A few of us attended a small get together where Steve and Geoff tested out this presentation – it was great and by the end you WILL have a good understanding of micro-controllers and what they can do.

*Mold Making and Casting 101 – By Victor Bariteau (AKA Halloween Zombie)*
Victor will show off the basics of mold making and casting. Learn what materials are needed for the results you want to achieve and understand terms like: “one and two part molds”, “keying”, “resins”, “release agents”, “curing”, “undercuts” and more. The best part is, Victor will demonstrate how to make a one piece silicone mold and a foam casting!

Here’s a quickie post from the Halloween-L list on a make and take from the Arizona Haunt Group. A make and take, in case yinz don’t know, is a bunch of haunters getting together to build multiple props in a semi-party atmosphere. Sometimes it’s something simple like a corpsed skull, other times it may be a complex pneumatic that involves welding. It’s done to keep the costs down for supplies and generally no profit is made by the host.

Attention Zonies! The AZ Halloween & Special Effects Association is hosting it’s first Make & Take! We’re going to be making Blinky Bugs & Fire Flies!
